Proceeds to Benefit St. Luke’s Medical Clinic in Staniel Cay, Bahamas Exuma Cays, Bahamas

Established in the early 1960s, Saint Luke’s Clinic on Staniel Cay, one of the Bahamas’ oldest Family Island Clinics, was created to address the island’s healthcare needs. Donna Chamberlain, a nurse, initialed its development in the late 1950s with community support. Our mission is to provide high-quality health care for both the island’s residents and visitors alike. In 2022 a community group initiated vital improvements to the east wing of the clinic, these included a brand new roof, new LED lighting. new flooring, a newly constructed pharmacy section, new desks, chairs, and filing cabinet, and new paint and detailing throughout. These improvements were accomplished with privately donated material and labor from island residents and other Friends of Staniel Cay.

What is needed:

West Wing:  The West wing of the Clinic (the original building) is gutted and in need of major repairs.  This is the section of the clinic that is closest to, and facing the beach.  It is this section that the Steering Committee believes makes the most sense in a triage/emergency function.  Therefore, the downstairs area will need to be outfitted to receive multiple trauma cases at the same time, and stabilize patients suffering from a variety of acute medical conditions.

In addition, given the shortage of affordable housing on Staniel Cay, the Steering Committee sees the need to be able to provide housing to visiting health care professionals (doctors and other specialists from optometrists, OBGYN, Dentists, etc) and therefore is proposing that the new construction on the West Wing include two upstairs apartments.

East Wing: The East Wing is nearly complete in terms of basic needs.  The building still needs some exterior repair work on the concrete walls and the entrance/walkway.

The overall electrical supply to the building (including a reliable standby generator) needs to be addressed.  A standby water and pressure system is also a must.

What is the role of the Bahamas Ministry of Health?

Throughout this process and in recent years, the MOH has provided medicines and supplies to the clinic, in addition to paying and providing housing for nurses, paying utilities, paying for nurses cell phones, etc)  The MOH has committed to continuing and even expanding this support.
